Objective Observer-Relative Flow Visualization in Curved Spaces for Unsteady 2D Geophysical Flows

چکیده
Computing and visualizing features in fluid flow often depends on the observer, or reference frame, relative to which input velocity field is given. A desired property of feature detectors therefore that they are objective, meaning independent frame. However, standard definition objectivity only given for Euclidean domains cannot be applied curved spaces. We build methods from mathematical physics Riemannian geometry generalize spaces, using powerful notion symmetry groups as basis definition. From this, we develop a general framework objective computation observer fields other computed measures become objective. An important our it works intrinsically 2D, instead 3D ambient space. This enables direct generalization 2D via optimization flat space domains, without having perform 3D. specifically case unsteady geophysical flows spheres, such Earth. Our spaces then enable well visualization time evolution scalar vector fields, automatically frames follow moving structures like vortices way makes them appear steady.

A non-linear observer for unsteady three-dimensional flows
A method is proposed to estimate the velocity field of an unsteady flow using a limited number of flow measurements. The method is based on a non-linear low-dimensional model of the flow and on expanding the velocity field in terms of empirical basis functions. The main idea is to impose that the coefficients of the modal expansion of the velocity field give the best approximation to the availa...
متن کاملEnergy dissipation in flows through curved spaces
Fluid dynamics in intrinsically curved geometries is encountered in many physical systems in nature, ranging from microscopic bio-membranes all the way up to general relativity at cosmological scales. Despite the diversity of applications, all of these systems share a common feature: the free motion of particles is affected by inertial forces originating from the curvature of the embedding spac...
متن کاملVisualization of Numerical Unsteady Fluid Flows
Instantaneous streamlines are commonly used to visualize particle paths in steady flows. It is shown, however, that streaklines are often more appropriate for unsteady flows. The typical size of unsteady flow simulations makes interactive visualization difficult if not impossible. Two common approaches for visualizing unsteady flows are described. The advantages and disadvantages of each are di...
